Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Anyone actually care if it’s real or not?

Just wanted to see what you boys reckon about olive oil. I’ve been adding a bit of EVOO into my diet lately, mainly for the health benefits and fats, but then I read a heap of it’s fake or low quality. Mixed with other oils and not actually "extra virgin".

Do any of you actually check what kind you’re using, or just grab whatever’s cheap, and what's the brands you guys use?

Keen to hear what others are doing.

I use EVOO for everything. Cooking, salads, even on rice lol. But you’re right, most of it’s fake or low quality. Hard to find real stuff cause there’s no proper regulation. I try stick to Cobram Estate, it’s one of the few that’s actually legit.

I use it daily. Sometimes even a spoon straight if I’m short on fats. Gotta be proper cold-pressed, dark bottle, single origin. It makes a big difference for health and quality. Part of my daily routine now.

I don't go near the cheap stuff.

I’ve read this article before… it’s crazy how bad it’s gotten… most people don’t realise a lot of olive oil on shelves isn’t what it claims to be. Cheap oils mixed in, fake labels etc. theses companies get away with it.

Yeah, I do care if it’s real. Authentic extra virgin olive oil has way better flavor and actual health benefits like antioxidants. I mostly use the good stuff for salads or after cooking, and cheaper oil for high heat. Makes a difference!
Anyone here use a particular medicinal olive oil daily?

So there’s no real regulation around EVOO labeling in Australia?
Nope, no real rules on EVOO labels here in Australia or most countries to my knowledge. Some brands do lie. Best bet is to buy ones that show test results or say they meet the Aussie standard. If there’s no proof, probs fake.

Good question — olive oil’s one of those things everyone calls “healthy fats” but almost no one looks at the label.

The sad truth is yeah, a heap of the supermarket stuff isn’t true EVOO. It’s often blended with cheaper seed oils or stored in clear bottles under bright lights, which nukes the polyphenols (the good antioxidant bits).

If you want the real deal, look for:

  • Harvest date on the bottle (not just “best before”). Fresher = better. Although not many will have a Harvest date on them, so a reasonable best before date is fine too.
  • Dark glass bottle — keeps it from going rancid.
  • Local or Australian-grown oils usually test cleaner than imported “Italian” blends that have done laps of the equator in a shipping container.

At the end of the day, it’s calories either way, but if you’re using it for health benefits (heart, joints, anti-inflammation), it’s worth buying the real thing.

Bonus tip: don’t cook it on full blast — treat it more like butter. Drizzle, don’t deep fry.
