Getting a spot for heavier lifts?

Should you always get a spot when lifting heavy or skip the lift if you can't do it solo?

When lifting heavy, do you get a spot, or think if you can't do it alone, don't try? I lean towards the second one but curious what you all think.

At my age and time of life I use the Smith machine

Are people still friendly enough nowadays to help you out?
I don't see it much in my gym because it's in a City area

I use to get spots when I was younger but not anymore. If I can't get those weights up no point in trying to lift them. Don't need the injuries 😂

I’m happy to do one less rep If lifting heavy 😅(strict 3-5 reps range) so not necessary.
Spot is handy when going to failure (usually above 5 reps for me)
